Attire Guide
Italy is the home of glamorous fashion and we aim to do her proud. The motto for our wedding is “an informal time in formal clothing”, which translates to whatever festive and fancy thing you can have the most fun in. These are just suggestions - the most important thing is to be comfortable. Now, è ora di vestirsi! (it’s time to get dressed!)
Bellisima!
Day 1 - Beach Club
Spritzes, Sunshine, and Slim Aarons
For everyone: Slim Aarons was a prolific photographer in the 1960s known for his vibrant portraits of travel destinations, including beaches on the Italian Coast. This translates to clothes by way of going retro - think 1960s pastels, prints, and stripes - stripes are always welcome! Pair your Aperol Spritz with a citrus-colored set, mellow yellow with some Limoncello, or bright blues to match the ocean. Most importantly, we want you to be comfortable sitting, sunning, and swimming! TLDR: Elevated beach attire - bring your bathing suit, a cover-up for the boat, a hat for the sun, SPF, and flip flops to dance in! Don’t forget goggles if you want to take a look around below the surface, and a sweatshirt for the way home. Towels will be provided.
For the ladies: Think retro Italian summer, or old Hollywood glamour by the sea. Brigitte Bardot vintage vibes. Balconette bathing suits, flowy sarongs, 60s prints, citrus colors. Bonus points for a head scarf, matching 3-piece set, over-sized hat, or fun sunnies.
For the gentlemen: Think linen or terry cloth shirts and shorts sets. Stripes, fun graphic t-shirts, and short-sleeve button downs are all fair game. Bathing suits of any kind are welcome, even dare we say Speedos…?
Wow!
Day 2 - Wedding Eve
Red Carpet & Red Sauce - Iconic Italian
For everyone: All of our favorite things are red: Love, Lobsters, Tomatoes, Nantucket, Taylor Swift’s best album, Carpets, and Sauce - why not celebrate them to match the evening’s menu?! “Red” is a loose term here - you can wear something actually red, something pink or maroon, or something in a different color that might be at home in front of a Step & Repeat - except this time our Step & Repeat is the Amalfi horizon. (For those who read the theme and go, okay but what does that meeeean, it means Cocktail).
For the ladies: Bring the good old-fashioned Italian drama. If you could picture it on an Italian soap opera or Sophia Loren, you’re in the right direction. Roses, red and white checkered fabrics, or anything that evokes Mediterranean romance all apply. Silks, satins, and spaghetti straps too (when in Rome right? Or Ravello!). If I had to pick one carpet to align it with, I would say the Emmy’s, because it’s festive but doesn’t have to be TOO fancy, ya know?
For the gentlemen: Jacket, but tie optional. We know red is harder for guys, so if it only ends up in your wine glass or your slice of pizza, that’s okay too. Think linen suits, colorful pocket squares, and printed button-downs. Khakis and shorts will play, and Salmon and Nantucket Red are always great red routes if you’re looking for one!
Day 3 - The Big Day!
Colorful & Creative Black Tie
For everyone: If you have something you love and have never found an occasion to wear to wear it, this is it. When we say colorful & creative, we mean it - bright is the name of the game, and unusual is even better. Just keep it fancy, formal, and fun. Don’t forget your sunglasses and your dancing shoes!
For the ladies: Ladies, this is the Met Gala of wedding attire - upstaging the bride is encouraged. Anything goes as long as it’s extra and not white: feathers, gloves, sequins, scarves, prints, pantsuits, embellishments, architecture, you name it (just please avoid black). Bonus points if it’s Sontag’s Camp, fewer points if it’s floral. The ceremony and reception will mostly be on grass so just keep that in mind for shoes! Also, most hotels in the village will be a 10-15 minute walk from Villa Cimbrone. If your shoes aren’t cobblestone-worthy, wear flats or flip flops ‘til you get to the venue and then we’ll find a place to stash ‘em until the after party.
For the gentlemen: Yes, sigh, a tuxedo in July… but listen, we know it will be hot, so that jacket doesn’t need to stay on for long. Kick your tux up a notch with some fun shoes and socks (or no socks), a wild bow tie, or a printed shirt underneath. Smoking slippers & needlepoint loafers welcome - so are tuxedos in a color other than black or white!
